On a Sponsor

“What obstacles do project managers face to successful completion of an Information Technology project?”

A Sponsor: Manager utilizing business solutions

“As a business person who has managed IT projects - the two key challenges in implementing an IT project are:

(1) estimating the level of customisation / configuration required

(2) estimating interface development

I believe that these two things and the issues that spin off them are the key "deal breakers" in IT projects.”

MüTō Observation:

These challenges are typically STRONG especially when there's a breakdown in communication between 'what' the client wants, and 'how' to get it to them.

All other things like IT Skill set/motivation being on par, this breakdown in the communication, or the lack of someone actively managing these discussions could lead to some of the cause for what you have listed.

But really, the point here is these issues arise within an I.T. team. Often times, a PM may not have access internally to the IT Team, and may find that not all the information is available. This adds to confusion, and disconcerting reporting (ie; Project Cost overruns/bad estimates).

Best to be open, and true. Now the kicker is HOW DO YOU HOLD someone accountable for that!? We've all been on the side of the fence when someone says "Oh come-on...you can do it for $50k less." heh, my response is... "No, really, we can't." I've been slapped for it, AND, I've been patted on the back for it.

I'm glad to say, I've been patted more than I've been slapped. Cooperation is another thing...similarly connected to the concepts above.
