Not knowing the technology

“What obstacles do project managers face to successful completion of an Information Technology project?”

Certified IT Professional; Consultant

“…non-technical participants, especially at the upper layers of management, cannot grasp the technical complexities that often lead to delays and a multitude of issues.

I highly suggest you make it your primary mission to understand (to the extent possible) the technology involved as it will aid you in successful project implementation.”

MüTō Observation:

If the PM cannot gain the technical knowledge, then they MUST surround themselves by true SME's in the topic.

I can't tell you how many times these impossible projects I was on were saved by the SME's recommendation, and my support (as PM) in communicating the recommendation to the exec's.
